Healthcare Education Without Borders!

The Certified Medical Administrative Assistant and Pharmacy Clerk classes decided to go international. Both classes are learning the elements of health insurance so ROP Administrator, Adele Berg, suggested making contact with an international speaker in order to make comparisons with another country.

As a result, Mrs. Turner contacted Patrice Jissendi, MD, PhD, of Lille 2 University in the North of France and ULB in Brussels, Belgium. Dr. Jissendi is a Neuroradiologist who does research and is also a Professor at the University. He was more than happy to volunteer time from his busy schedule to assist us with our project. Dr. Jissendi is familiar with the SMCOE Regional Occupational Program; he had spent six months doing a research fellowship in San Francisco with UCSF Medical Center in 2007 and learned about our Program from Mrs. Turner. He considered this to be an extraordinary opportunity to enlighten this group of eager students as a means of support in assisting them to maintain a high level of zeal for helping patients.

Ms. Berg wanted students at the ROP Center to experience first-hand how technology can be used in connecting people for the benefit of the patient. Additionally, she felt it was important for the students living in a multicultural environment to learn about health care in other countries. As a result of these combined efforts, SMCOE/ROP conducted its first International Skype lecture.

This opportunity was taken very seriously and the students prepared for the experience by doing research and had a discussion about the goal of the lecture.

These two groups of students were very excited about the opportunity to learn about health care in another country. Dr. Jissendi did an excellent job in explaining how citizens of Belgium are insured by their particular health care organization. He briefly described the government agency, INAMI, that administers health insurance policies to citizens of Belgium. He further explained that coverage is mandatory for all residents in Belgium. He provided a general explanation of how citizens are insured and reimbursed, and since our students will be processing claims in the near future, they compared how it was done in Belgium and discovered there was a coding system in use there as well. The class learned that administrative personnel are as valuable to doctors in Belgium as they are here in the Bay Area, comparing education and salary.

As a group, we deduced that there is no perfect health care system. We merely wish to do our very best on behalf of our patients and to serve them to the best of our ability.

The CMAA and Pharmacy Clerk classes wish to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Jissendi for his time and excellent lecture. As Instructors, we love challenging ourselves by incorporating new methods by which we can educate our students. Additionally, we are grateful to Ms. Berg for supporting and encouraging us to try new and innovative instructional methodologies with our students.

Fall 2012 - ROP Student Graduation

Graduation 022.JPG

On Friday, December 21, 2012, the Medical/Dental Program students graduated 58 students in a ceremony at the San Mateo County Office of Education in Redwood City.

Present at this formal, dignified graduation ceremony were Superintendent Anne Campbell, Dr. Joan Rosas, Associate Superintendent, Student Services Division, Sue Wieser, Associate Superintendent, Human Resources, Glenn Siegel, Administrator, Classified  Human Resources, and Nancy Magee, Board Support and Community Relations.  Board members present included Jim Cannon, Rhonda Ceccato and Joe Ross.

The graduates processed in to the traditional Pomp and Circumstance.  The Pledge of allegiance was led by Renee McAuliffe, Dental Assistant Instructor.  Adele Berg, Program Administrator, delivered the Welcome Address.  Student speakers, one per program, addressed the students, their guests, Board and Cabinet; Laura Lombardo, Andre Turner, Amber D'Antonio and Shafia Nisa.  Superintendent Anne Campbell congratulated and recognized the accomplishments of each of the graduates and the dedication of their teachers Margarita Rodriguez, Pearlette Turner and Renee McAuliffe.  Staff members who made this all possible included Jean Corpuz, Katia Sturtevant, Cece Mulcahy and Ana Soto.

This was the first group graduation ever conducted by SMCOE/CTE with a program theme in a formal environment.  We have added a significant degree of rigor to our curriculum:  The National Certification test to both Insurance Billing and Coding as well as Medical Administrative Assistant.  Approximately 75% of the Billing and Coding students passed the certification test, and 100% of the Medical Administrative Assistant students passed their test.  Further, our partnerships with hospitals and dental offices have allowed us to provide internships to the students which have resulted in jobs for a number of our graduates.

We at SMCOE/CTE/ROP will continue to celebrate student accomplishments in the future through a graduation ceremony.  Congratulations to the graduates of Fall 2012.

SMCOE ROP
Dental Assisting Class

by Renee McAuliffe, Instructor

The ROP Dental Assisting class is expanding to new horizons.

We graduated our first Radiation Safety Course in July 2012. In the summer of 2011 we were approved to incorporate the radiation Safety Course into our Dental Assisting Class. We were informed that all Dental Assistant’s working in a Dental Office would be required to have a Radiation Safety License, 8 Hour Infection Control Certificate and  Dental Law Act Certificate beginning January 2010. We have been able to partner with Leslie Canham and Associates to provide the 8 Hour Infection Control portion of the class while we wait for approval from the  Dental Board Commissions.

We will be offering 2 classes a year to the Dental Community who is need of these courses.

ROP continues to grow in new and modern ways. We have a website where students may register online. The website address is www.rop-smcoe-rop-ca.schoolloop.com.
